Biography: Dr. Ariane Helou’s research focuses on drama, music, and poetry in early modern England, Italy, and France. Before coming to UCLA she taught at UC Santa Cruz, where she also earned her Ph.D. Her book manuscript, Figures of voice in Early Modern Europe, explores early modern theories of voice and the relation of voice to body, gender, and affect in theatrical and musical practices. Dr. Helou is also a professional theatrical dramaturg; a translator of poetry and drama; and a performing artist whose background spans early music, theater, and opera.
